5th Grade Class

Hi, 5th grade! Welcome to our new website.  We will be using this as a temporary classroom for a while. I will post videos and sound clips to accompany your weekly classwork.  You can also make bookings for personal conferencing to ask questions or have some tutoring time.  Here we go...

Weekly Assignment starting Monday June 1st 2020

I have been working to make it easier for parents to understand the activities that your child should be working on each day. In case you still need it last weeks assignments are at the end of this web page.

A couple of general reminders!

  1. Be sure to book time on my calendar so I can help you and your child as needed.

  2. I would like to keep track of your child's work so please remember to send me pictures of completed work.

  3. If this seems too much let me know and I can adjust for your individual child as needed.

  4. If you need help on how to send completed work, I can help with some best practices.

  5. Stay positive, these are unusual times and its challenging for all of us!

(Please note that I am trying to make sure adverts do not show up but it's challenging with Youtube)

Overview of the week

This week 5th grade will read about famous parks an gardens and create a map of their version of the perfect park.  They should have a compass and a key, so it is easy to draw their map of the park.

There are also some "just for fun things to do in our last week of school. Finally, they should pick a talent they would like to share with the class for our previous zoom call. Examples include such things as a song, dance, drawing, painting poem.  No electronics of any kind, please.

Monday

1. Have your child think about his or her own experience with parks. Have them imagine a place called "My Park" and think about all of the things to see and do in this imaginary park.

2. Have them write key features of parks on a piece of paper. Ideas may include: places to run, play, climb, look at plants or animals, or picnic. Click here for the worksheet.

3. Have your child look at a few famous parks in the United States (click here for "7 Best Urban Parks") and make observations about what they see in these parks. Add these observations to the list of features on their paper. Some topics to include:

  • What makes parks unique? Why might people want to visit them? (a monument, a historical site, geological features such as geysers or rock formations, a river or lake, a mountain range)

  • What activities might people do in the park? (Canoeing, hiking, fishing, learning about history or wildlife)

  • What are things that people might need while at these parks? (Answers may include trails, campsites, a place to buy food and supplies, trashcans and recycling bins, bathrooms, water, and more.

4. Have your child complete one puzzle a day. I have included three games your child can choose from; these are fun solitary or multiple person games that you could continue to paly over the summer. Have fun, it's the last week of school!
